Mena is known for it’s beautiful mountains and rivers. Folks come from all over the country to visit our antique stores and vistas. However, something they probably don’t count on seeing is all the trash. While efforts are made to burn out the underbrush and local wildlife from surrounding forests, little effort seems to be made to keep our highways and roadsides clean. Perhaps efforts should be refocussed toward keeping graffiti off of our beautiful natural rock formations and trash out of our water sources and forests.

G r a n d View Vista, although destroyed with spray-paint and vulgarities, is familiar to most locals and frequent visitors, but the trash seems to be swept under the rug… Rather, it is swept right into our water, our forests and roadsides.

T r a s h seems to be piling up in Polk County and can frequently be seen from the highway in any direction. Carelessness and laziness is becoming the beginning of our Earth’s end. What can we do about it? We can do a lot, starting with making an effort.

Earth Day is April 22, 2019 and the City of Mena Annual Spring Clean-Up is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 23, 2019. City trucks will pick up items you want to dispose of at no charge. Although this clean-up service is free for residences within the City limits of Mena only, you can do your part by reducing your waste, reusing sustainable items, and recycling what you can, such as paper, plastics, and metals! We have many available opportunities right here in Mena to help you become more sustainably efficient such as PCDC R e c y c l i n g Center!

D o n ’ t wait. Start today and do your part in helping keep our community clean and beautiful!
