Anticipation filled the air as participating artists and guests awaited the naming of Oklahoma’s Wood Artist of the Year during the 8th annual “Master Woodworking Artist of the Year” opening reception at the Forest Heritage Center Museum in March of 2019.
Wayne Delyea of Granbury, Texas, received the prestigious title of “Master Woodworking Artist” with a desk titled “The Creation.” Bringing up a close second was Robert Frerking of Concordia, MO for a segmented woodturning and tied for third place was Matt Faupel of St. Louis, MO for an inlayed sassafras coffee table and Janice Levi of Grosbeck, Texas for a woodturning titled “Wilderness.”
Places for the “Exemplary Local Artist of the Year” category included:
lst Place: Darrell Whisenhunt of Mena, AR for “Cheese, Crackers & Wine”
2nd Place: Roger Tipton of Ashdown, AR for “Flaming Star”
3d Place: Mike Love of Idabel, OK for “Honobia Cherry Vase”
“As the “Wood Art Capital of Oklahoma,” we were honored to host such a prominent exhibit with-commendable artists, known to many by their wood artwork,” stated Doug Zook, FHC Director. The work of these artists will be on display in the “Artist of the Year” gallery until May 5th. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00-4:00 p.m.
