Aubrey Tapley Sports Complex Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Fowler told the Mena Advertising and Promotion Commission that spring registration is underway during the A&P Commission monthly meeting held Wednesday, Feb. 3rd at the City Hall Building.

Fowler went on to report that the majority of the sponsorship sign money had come in and that they had received a $1,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield for safety equipment such as catcher’s gear. The Commission also approved the annual purchase of balls, bases, field supplies necessary to operated the sports complex. Fowler also mentioned a slow-pitch softball tournament is scheduled for Mar. 5th.

The Commission also approved, upon Fowlers recommendation, the Aubrey Tapley Sports Complex concession stand operation contract bid. Commissioner Terri Neugent brought up several issues for the Commission to consider, including Lum & Abner Festival entertainers, the train ride and the possibility of not holding a pageant this year. The Commission also discussed T-shirts for distance runners. No action was taken on any of the discussions.

Commissioner Rodney Roland consented to be in charge of the 3-on-3-basketball tournament annually held during the Lum & Abner Festival. The Commissioners talked about the July 4th Fireworks Celebration to be held Saturday, July 2. No action was taken.

The Commission approved sending Terri Neugent to the Governor’s Conference on Tourism to be held March 13-15 in Springdale. After discussion, no action was taken concerning the National Tourist and Travel Week that will be held May 5 from 3-5 p.m., at the Queen Wilhelmina State Park Lodge. Announcements included the March 12 Talimena 13.1 Run & Relay set to begin at 8:30 a.m. at Janssen Park. The next Mena Advertising and Promotion Commission meeting will be held Tuesday, Mar. 1st at 5:30 p.m. at the City Hall Building.
