The Cossatot Lady Eagles (25-11, 13-1) ended their season last Wednesday, Feb. 27, against the Quitman Lady Bulldogs (28-7, 14-0) in the first round of the 2A State Basketball Tournament at Carlisle High School.
Cossatot held a two point, 15-13, lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Lady Eagles were held to only two points in the second, as Quitman took a three point, 20-17, lead into halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs again outscored Cossatot in the third quarter, 11-6, to extend their lead to eight points, 31-23, going into the final quarter of play. Cossatot's senior girls made a push for the win in the fourth, reaching within two points with a minute left, but ultimately fell short by five, 39-34.
Quitman moved on to the quarter-finals and lost to Earle by twelve, 70-58.
The Cossatot Lady Eagles end their season as winners of 25 games, and as Conference and District Champions.
Lady Eagles Coach, Tyler Timms, commented on his teams performance against Quitman saying, "I thought there in the second and third quarters we didn't do a good job of running out stuff. We felt like we could hurt them inside, but unfortunately we never got the ball there as much as we needed to, and that is on everybody."
Timms added, "Give credit to Quitman, that was the best man defense we have seen all year and our kids had a chance to win the game down by two with a minute left to play. I was proud of our kids though, to hold them to 39, that is what kept us in the ballgame."
On his teams season, Timms noted, "We had a heck of a year. To win 25 games, earn conference and district champions, and make it to the state tournament, with overall a very young team. I'm proud of our kids and always have been."
