Christmas has begun in Polk County

There were huge crowds for the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce 2019 Mena Christmas Parade of Lights! The parade was held Saturday, Dec. 7 in beautiful downtown Mena. This is truly “the most wonderful time of the year” and the people of Mena and Polk County sure know how to kick-off the Christmas season. The streets were lined with friends and family anxiously awaiting the sights and sounds that signalled Christmas was just around the corner.

There were approximately 35 floats from individuals and organizations from across the community and the parade participants went all out with lights, music, and celebration. Countless hours go into creating these incredible floats and the creativity of the entrants is amazing! The floats were evaluated and awards were given in eight different categories:

Best in Show 1st: Mena Regional Health System

Best in Show 2nd: Christ Community Fellowship

Best in Show 3rd: First Financial Bank

Best Theme Representation: Christ Community Fellowship

Best Small Business Float: Ouachita Nature Builders

Best Church Float: Christ Community Fellowship

Chamber Favorite: University of Arkansas Rich Mountain

People’s Choice: Mena Regional Health System

The parade was only the beginning to the evening’s festivities. The Mena Advertising and Promotion Commission presented the 2019 Mena Christmas Festival in Janssen Park. Crowds gathered around the park to listen to Lana Gail and Gail Force perform the songs of Christmas and visit with Santa in his Outback Barn. As the crowds sang along, the spirit of Christmas filled the air. Returning this year, ArkyPyro and the Hog Wild Crew continue to light up the night sky with their brilliant fireworks display. All eyes were upward, as the fireworks led up to a treasured tradition for Mena and Polk County. To end the evening, the Janssen Park lighting ceremony lit up the park and the cheers of the crowd brought the magical evening to a close.

We are fortunate to live in such an generous community! And a special thank you and acknowledgment goes out to everyone who participated in, and made possible, this years parade and festival.
