Good times are set to roll from downtown Mena to the top of Rich Mountain from August 25 through 27, during the 42nd annual Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run.

A variety of events is expected to attract visitors and residents to the area, said event host representing the Mena-Polk County Chamber of Commerce and Mena Advertising and Promotion Commission.

The two entities transitioned to taking the event’s organizational reigns last year and solidified the responsibilities going forth.

“This a is a huge event for our area,” said chamber director Ashely Smith. “Many people know about Mena because of the Rod Run and all that the late Mark Campbell meant to the show.”

Campbell, a car enthusiast and business owner, passed in April 2015, passing on his wishes for the Rod Run to continue.

Campbell’s wife, Lisa, said the 40th annual Rod Run in 2015 was ‘a fitting tribute’ to her husband.

“I think it went really well,” Lisa said of the 2015 event. “It was a huge crowd. Much bigger than normal. We had 238 registered vehicles. Over the last couple of years, it was in the 150-160 range.”

Mean AP Commission is expecting a similar response from participants this year.

Approximately 200 hot rods and street rods are expected to be on display starting Friday night along North Mena Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition to nostalgic cars lining streets and cruising roads, music, concessions and additional activities will be offered.

Hot rods will be on display Saturday atop Rich Mountain at Queen Wilhelmina State Park and will make their way to downtown Mena on South Mena Street for the Mena Advertising & Promotion Commission’s Rod Run Saturday Night Street Dance and Concert.

“This year’s concert is sure to bring a huge crowd,” said  Donnie Crain, Mena Advertising & Promotion Commission Marketing and Festival Coordinator.

“The rock’n roll music of The Richie Owens Band, concessions, fun and good times will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, and you wont want to miss it.”

The Richie Owens Band is a West Arkansas favorite featuring great musicians and entertainers, offering a variety of sounds from country to old fashioned rock’n roll, Crain said.
