The Mena Advertising & Promotion Commission held its regular monthly meeting on October 3.

July A&P tax revenues from restaurants were $14,586, comparable to July of 2016 and July A&P tax revenues from lodging were $4,164, down $1,140 from the previous year. At time of meeting, there was one lodging 30 days in arrears and one lodging 90 days in arrears. There were no restaurants in arrears.

The next scheduled A&P event is the Christmas Festival which will be held the first Saturday in December.

At 6 p.m., the Chamber of Commerce will kick off the night with the “Dreaming of a White Christmas” parade.

Immediately following the parade, at approximately 7 p.m., the Mena Advertising and Promotion Commission’s Christmas Festival will begin in Janssen Park with a 30-minute lively Christmas performance by the band Lana Gail and Gail Force.

The A&P appreciates this local band for their talent and commitment to presenting great Christmas music to get everyone in a festive mood for the holidays.

The music will be followed by the A&P’s Extra Special Christmas Fireworks Display and then the Official Lighting Ceremony of Janssen Park by the City of Mena. A huge crowd always enjoys this fun night, it is great for the community. It is one of my favorite nights of the year.

The Commission is also thrilled to announce the KCS Holiday Express Train will be stopping in Mena this year. Mark your calendar for Thursday, December 7 and bring the kids to the Mena Depot to tour the Holiday Express Train.

Santa’s Elves will begin greeting the children at 4 p.m. The kids will receive a gift bag and have the opportunity to visit with Santa after touring the train. This is truly a fantastic night for the kids and parents. The City of Mena is always excited when KCS brings the Holiday Express to Mena. This awesome event is free to the public and a favorite of many.

I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather and the changing of the colors. This is a beautiful time of the year to drive the Talimena National Scenic Byway. A few leaves are starting to turn and sweet gums are turning yellow.

I encourage each of you to invite your out-of-town family and friends to come Visit Mena. We are a wonderful destination for anyone to come for the day, the night, or even better come for a week’s stay. Also invite them to visit the A&P’s tourism website at and download our Tourism Brochure to see all the wonders we have to offer.
