Betty LaVene Tafoya, age 89, was born on August 12, 1930, in Sharon, Kansas to Neal and Bessie McDaniel. Betty’s family moved to Victorville, California in 1936 where she grew up, married and raised three boys. In 1992, Betty moved to Mena, Arkansas to be closer to her son Mike Kelsey and his wife Sue. In 1999, Betty married William Joseph “Bill” Tafoya.
Betty was active in the local Elks Lodge in Mena where she generously contributed her time as a volunteer in service to the Mena community. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, quilting, and cooking. Betty also loved her dogs, and throughout her life, she had dogs by her side. She also excelled at playing cards and computer games. Most of all, Betty enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing with her husband Bill.
Betty passed away peacefully on September 11, 2019 at the Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was surrounded by her family.
Betty is survived by her two sons Neal and Mike and her daughter Colleen, her daughters in laws Myrna, Sheryl and Sue Kelsey, six grandchildren (Michael, Michelle, Chris, Justin, Daniel and Brian), seven great grandchildren (Cole, Cassandra, Antonio, Aaron, Timothy, Nina and Laiana), and several great-great grandchildren.
Betty lived a healthy and full life and was always surrounded by her family. In her philosophy of life, no mountain was too tall and no journey was too far. Accordingly, she lived life in the fast lane according to her rules. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.
At the family’s request, there will be no memorial service. Her remains will be buried next to her husband Bill in the Veterans National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
