Ouachita Beekeepers Meeting

The Polk County Library offers Ancestry.com to patrons who wish to search genealogy and family history records, or to build a family tree. The site also includes message boards, news, research tools, and how-to articles. This is a great electronic resource for family history for anyone interested.

CASA Seeks Volunteers
CASA-court appointed special advocates for children of abuse/neglect are looking for volunteers in Polk County. CASA volunteers are people just like you with a few hours each week to dedicate to helping children who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care due to allegations of abuse or neglect. CASA Volunteers receive 30 hours of training designed to help them interview people important in the life of the child and report their findings to the Judge, allowing him to make the best decision he can in the best interest of the child. If you are interested in volunteering or wish to make a contribution to the CASA of the Ouachita Region, Inc., please call Cynthia Schoeppey at 479-243-9277. A.B.A.T.E. District 6
Arkansas Bikers Aiming Toward Education will hold monthly meetings on the first Sunday of every month at Lime Tree Restaurant in Mena. You don’t have to ride to attend or become a member. Board Meeting at 2:30 p.m. and General Meeting at 3:00 p.m. We are a non-profit organization.
Showroom Music Theatre
The Showroom Music Theatre with Lanny Richmond Band, Lori J and Brauna is open Friday and Saturday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Chevy Hill just North of Judy's Drive In in Waldron. Admission is $6. Family entertainment, bring the kids, 12 and under free. For more info call 479-637-6927.
A+ Labels
Don’t throw out those Tyson Project A+ labels! Those labels can help Polk County Developmental Center provide services for preschoolers with special needs in our area. It’s easy, just look for the Tyson Project A+ label on participating packages of Tyson products and cut it out. So simple but what a difference it can make! You can drop them off at PCDC Resale Store or Jumpstart Preschool or mail them to P.O. Box 926, Mena. If you have any questions call Ann at 479-394-2671.
Women of Prayer
The Polk County Women of Prayer has changed its name to Women of Prayer. Come join us every month at the Lime Tree Restaurant as we pray using the Word of God for Mena, Polk County, Arkansas, the United States, Israel and the rest of the world. Ladies from all church denominations are welcome.
PCDC Recycling
Need to have some paper shredded, how about getting rid of all that junk mail, do you have magazines and newspapers piling up? Everyone has plastic soda/water bottles and milk jugs that accumulate. Did you know that when you bring your recycle items to Polk County Developmental Center you are providing jobs for the developmentally disabled in our area? We recycle #1 & #2 plastic bottles, paper, junk mail, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, ink cartridges, cell phones, and rechargeable batteries. Help the environment, the community, and PCDC by dropping off your recycle at the back of the work center at 205 S. Morrow. PCDC Fundraiser
Do you need some more storage space? Polk County Developmental Center has a great new fundraiser that will help you with that problem. You just could be the new owner of a brand new 8 ft. x 12 ft. Outback storage building! Come down to the PCDC Resale Store to see this building and pick up your chance to win. Tickets will be on sale at the Resale Store for just $1 each and you can buy as many as you like for an even better chance to win. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward PCDC facility expansion. PCDC is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to serving the developmentally disabled in our area for almost 40 years. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Welcome Home Program
St.Agnes Catholic Parish presents weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings. This on-going series is open to anyone interested in learning about the Catholic Church. If you have been away from the Church or are looking for a Church home or just was to learn more about our faith, we welcome you. Rich Mountain Conservation District would like to announce that their Grain Drills that were formerly housed and rented out at Polk County Farmers Association now can be rented at their office at 508 7th Street in Mena. (across from Janssen Park Playground).

Salvation Army Donations
In the month of April, the Salvation Army Store in Mena will be accepting non-perishable food donations. With each donation, it will earn $1 off any item in the store. All donations will be accepted and appreciated to help fill the food pantry.

The Story
Dallas Avenue Baptist Church is excited to announce that we are going through a ground breaking study of the Bible. The Bible is essential to our faith, but many find it hard to understand and few have read it all the wat through. At 6 PM Sunday nights, which begun April 8, our preschool, children, youth and adult small groups will be going through he book “The Story”. The Story is a 31 week, chronological study through the Bible. We invite you to join us as we discover the Bible as one continuous story of God and His People.

Six Mile Cemetery
The Six Mile Cemetery will be have a clean up day May 12 starting at 8:00am. Anyone planning to participate should mark their schedule. Ground leveling for ease of maintenance and removal of aged and fading decor will be the primary objective prior to our regular scheduled decoration on May 27. If you have any flowers or decor you wish to keep, please remove them prior to this date.
Owens Chapel Cemetery Annual Meeting
The Owens Chapel Cemetery Association Annual Meeting is May 20th at 2:00 pm at the cemetery. Public is welcome.
Hatfield Assembly of God Homecoming
Hatfield Assembly of God Church will be Celebration their 60th Anniversary on Sunday-May 20th at 10:30 am. Dinner will be served after service. Dinner on the Ridge
Saturday, May 19, at 4:00 pm, Rick and Donna Chrisman are having a fund-raising dinner ("Dinner on the Ridge") in support of Mena Art Gallery. The menu is Mexican; tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the gallery. We would appreciate your purchasing tickets in advance so that we can plan for the amount of food to prepare. The dinner will be rescheduled in case of inclement weather. There will also be a raffle of one of the Chrisman's beautiful wood boxes. Tickets are $3 each and will also be used for door prizes. Hatfield Tops Club
The Hatfield Tops Club will be meeting at the Hatfield Library from now on, each Monday. The Tops Club had previously been meeting at Hatfield Town Hall. Weekly weigh-ins are from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., with the meeting to follow.

The Annual Ink fire department fish fry fundraiser will be Saturday May, 19, 2012 4 p.m. to ????. Menu includes: Fried Catfish, Hushpuppies, Pinto Beans, Coleslaw and Homemade Desserts. Live Music will be performed. Raffling off three $100 Wal-Mart girt cards. Door Prizes. Cost: A donation to fire department.
Polk County Retired Teachers
The Polk County Retired Teachers will have the May meeting on Thursday, May 17, 2012 ar Simple Simons Pizza. The program will be by Charles and Marilyn Schroyers. All retired teachers and retired school employees are invited to attend. the meeting will start at 11:30 a.m.
Dallas Avenue Baptist Church
Dallas Avenue Baptist Church, 300 Dallas Avenue, gives out food on the last Thursday of each month. Time 8:00-11:00 or until food runs out. If you need food its best to come early.
Ouachita Artists
Ouachita Artists will meet Monday, May 21, at 3:30 at their gallery, located at 135 West Street in Mount Ida. Although the topic has not yet been announced, it will be a program meeting. The public is invited to view the new display of art works, along with featured student art. The gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 to 3:00 and Saturday, 10:00 to 8:00.
Ouachita River School District
The Ouachita River School District Board meeting will be held on May 21, 2012. This meeting is on the Oden Campus and will begin at 7:00 p.m. The board meetings are always open to the public.
Eight Principles of Fishing and Marketing Art.
Monday, May 21, 5:30 pm. Henry Moreno will do a presentation at Mena Art Gallery, 607 Mena Street, on "Eight Principles of Fishing and Marketing Art." Henry will tell us how these two activities are related and how you can be more successful at marketing art. Admission is free, and you don't have to be an artist to attend.
Art Day
Tuesday, May 22, 11 am to 2 pm, is "Art Day" at Mena Art Gallery, 607 Mena Street. Bring your current project and join other artists working independently while enjoying each other's company. Admission free.
Hot Water Bath Canning
Hot water bath canning will be offered May 22 & 24, both at 6:00 pm. The cost of the class is $10. A 2:00 class is also planned for May 30 & June 4. Classes using the pressure canner are planned for June 12 & 15 at 2:00 pm and June 18 & 20 at 6:00 pm. Call the Extension Office for more information and to pre-register at 479-394-6018.
The Odditorium
This Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. The Ouachita Little Theatre (OLT) will host The Odditorium, a one-man tribute to circus sideshows, featuring nationally-known entertainer/performer, Paul Prater. Magic, mind reading, storytelling and other mystical feats will be performed in an audience-interactive show. Actor Timothy Rhodes will open the show with his humorous Life of William Shakespeare monologue. Tickets are $10, $8 for students and seniors. Concord Cemertery Association
The Concord Cemetery Association will have it's annual meeting in the Ink Community building on Sunday, May 20 at 2:00. Officers will be elected. All board members and the public are invited. Flowers can now be put back on graves.
Church Women of Polk County Luncheon
The Church Women of Polk County will hold their quarterly potluck luncheon on May 21, 2012 at 12:00 noon at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 203 8th Street in Mena. Guest speaker will be Sally Hatch.
