After taking a 34-22 blow against the Pottsville Apaches (2-3, 1-1) on Homecoming, the Mena Bearcats (3-2, 0-2) are preparing for their trip to Dover to take on the Pirates (0-5, 0-2) this Friday, October 11.
The Apaches were the first team to reach the scoreboard last Friday. However, Mena did respond and tie the ballgame a 7-7 when Zane Stephens connected with Jake Wiles on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Pottsville scored another touchdown before halftime, in which the Bearcats only added three more points on a 31-yard field goal by Luiz Pessoa, to make the halftime score 14-10 in favor of the visiting Apaches.
In the second half, the Bearcats were outscored 20-12, to the ballgame by twelve, 34-22.
Following Friday's loss, Mena now moves down to number 15 on Hooten's 4A rankings. This week the Bearcats will match up with #47 ranked Dover. The Pirates, who are coached by former Mena Bearcat Reed Mendoza, are currently off to an 0-2 start to conference play. Dover lost in week one of conference competition to Subiaco Academy (38-14), and was defeated at Elkins 55-0 last week.
According to Fearless Friday, the Bearcats are 5-0 against Dover is past match ups, and are listed as 31-point favorites by Hootens.com.
