Mena Volleyball dominates Ladycat Classic

The Mena Ladycats senior high volleyball team hosted the annual Ladycat Classic on Saturday, September 7, at the Union Bank Center. Teams from Arkadelphia, Ashdown, Booneville, Jessieville, Mansfield, Mena, Pottsville, and Waldron competed in the tournament. In pool play, the Mena Varsity quad won 7 sets, while losing only one, and earned the #1 seed from their pool going into the Gold Bracket. Meanwhile, the Mena JV team recorded the same record, won their pool, and received the second #1 seed in the Gold Bracket.

Moving on to tournament play, in the Silver Bracket, Arkadelphia won the finals after defeating Jessieville in the first round and Pottsville in the semi-finals. In the Gold Bracket, both Mena teams received a bye, as Mansfield defeated Waldron and Ashdown defeated Booneville in the first round.

In the semi-finals, Mena Varsity took down Mansfield, as the Mena JV team went to a tiebreaker and fell short to the Ashdown Pantherettes. The Mena Ladycats swept the finals match over the Pantherettes to win the Gold Bracket.

While it was a tournament early in the season, Ladycat Volleyball Coach Brad Lyle stated, “I’m pleased. There were a lot of good things shown.”

Lyle was impressed with the Mena JV squad as well, saying, “I am very proud of all of the girls. We almost played each other in the championship game which is almost unheard of. I’m just proud.”

Overall, Lyle believes that his team battled through the entire tournament and got better.

“I think we are going to have a great year.”

On Monday, the Mena Jr. High and Sr. High Volleyball teams hosted Booneville. The Jr. Varsity Ladycats won their game 2-0 set wins of 25-11 and 25-19. Following the Jr. High game, both the Sr. JV and Varsity teams swept Booneville 2-0 and 3-0.

The Mena Jr. Ladycats also competed this week at Little Rock Central on Tuesday. The Jr. Varsity team won their game in two sets (25-7, 25-8).

Mena Jr. Volleyball is scheduled to compete in the Paris Jr. Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, before both the Mena Jr. High and Sr. High teams host Hot Springs Lakeside at the Union Bank Center on Monday, September 16.
