Following a successful Red vs. Black scrimmage and a scrimmage at Magnolia High School, the Mena Bearcats are set for another great football season, starting off against the De Queen Leopards.
The Jr. Bearcats are scheduled to scrimmage Charleston on Thursday, August 22, before kicking off the regular season at De Queen on September 5. This season the Mena Junior High squad has a new head coach, Chad Arnold, who will begin his first year as a head coach this year.
As for the senior high team, the Craig Bentley era will officially get under way on Friday, August 30, when the De Queen Leopards come to town. The Bearcats are ranked behind only Ozark and Dardanelle in the 4-4A Preseason Coaches' Poll according to Hootens.com. In the 4A as a whole, Mena Football is ranked as the 10th best team. Meanwhile, the Leopards of De Queen are ranked 29th in the 5A and 8th in the 5A South.
Last season, the Bearcats took down De Queen 28-14, as the Leopards went on to win only one game in the season. This season Mena has high expectations, as many have compared this years squad to the 2014 Bearcats, which finished as 4A State Runner-Ups.
The Bearcats will begin their season under the lights at Bearcat Stadium on Friday, August 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
