Local basketball continues in Polk County, as both squads from Acorn remain undefeated in conference thus far in the season. Meanwhile, as Cossatot and Mena big games are coming up.
Last Friday, all three schools were in action. For Acorn, the Tigers and Lady Tigers traveled to Gurdon. The Acorn senior girls pulled out a 66-51 win, before the senior boys captured a seven-point, 44-37, victory.
Murfreesboro hosted the Cossatot Eagles and Lady Eagles and came away with a sweep. In a tight senior girls contest, the Lady Rattlers defeated Cossatot 41-32, before an even tighter boys game went to Murfreesboro 37-34.
At Mena, the Nashville Scrappers were in town for some hardwood action. The Scrapperettes won the girls game by a score of 46-29. The Mena senior boys forced overtime in the finale of the night, but fell short by two points, 43-41.
On Tuesday evening, all local teams were in action on their home courts. At Acorn, the Tigers and Lady Tigers swept Horatio. In the senior girls match, the Lady Tigers (20-4, 9-0) tallied a 64-50 win, and in a much wider spread, the Acorn senior boys (17-6, 9-0) won 85-41.
Down south at Cossatot, the Lady Eagles (15-8, 6-2) handled the Foreman Lady Gators 54-13. However, in a close senior boys contest, the Eagles (3-19, 2-6) came up short 60-51.
Lastly, at Mena, the Arkadelphia Badgers came to town. The Ladycats (8-10, 3-2) broke their losing stretch with a 40-35 victory. For the second game in a row, the Mena senior boys (3-12, 0-5) forced overtime, but fell to the Badgers 47-40.
The Cossatot Eagles and Lady Eagles will host Mount Ida on Thursday, January 23. On Friday, Mena will travel to Hope, as Acorn hosts Dierks for a big conference matchup.
