As the Mena Bearcats tried to keep their playoff hopes alive, they had to come back to Bearcat Stadium and take on a tough Fountain Lake Cobra team. Unfortunately, they came up on the short end once again, 42 to 7.

“We ran into another buzz saw Friday night. Fountain Lake had us circled on their schedule. They had a senior laden team. 19 of their 22 starters were seniors,” replied Mena coach Tim Harper. “It eliminated us from the playoffs for the first time in six years.”

Fountain Lake took the opening kickoff and proceeded to march 72 yards in 10 plays. Chance Wilson for the Cobras ripped of runs of 14 and 22 yards on that drive culminating in a 4 yard run by Parker Ross and Tyler Patton’s PAT gave the Cobras a 7 to 0 lead.

Mena took over moving the ball after Carson Cannon found Ty Cole for a first down, the Bearcats coughed it up as Cannon was hit and fumbled the football. Fountain Lake took over and started driving again. Wilson and Ross toted the rock most of the yards on a 58 yard drive and Wilson scored with 2:24 to go in the first from 6 yards out. The PAT was good and he Cobras led 14-0.

Mena went 3 and out on its ensuing possession and punted. Fountain Lake started marching again. McCoy, Ross and Wilson set the tone as they gained most of the yardage on the ground. With 10:20 to go until halftime, Ross scored from the 5. The PAT was blocked and the Cobras increased the lead 20-0.

Mena started the next possession at the Bearcat 31, but on 3rd and 6 from the 35 the Cobras Sean McNeely intercepted a pick 6 for a touchdown. Ross added the two point conversion and the Bearcats found themselves in a deeper hole 28-0 in the first half.

Ryan Ozanich returned the kickoff to the 50 and moved the ball on the series but lost the momentum at the Fountain Lake 15. The offensive effort stalled once again. The Cobras took over possession and marched on the Bearcat defense again. In a drive that took just over 4 minutes, they drove 85 yards in 11 plays as Wilson led the charge. He scored from 13 yards out, the PAT was good with 3:26 to go in the first half. The Bearcats next offensive possession failed to produce any points and both teams went to the locker room at the half with Fountain Lake up 35-0.

To start the 3rd quarter, a great kickoff return got Mena rolling in the right direction. Cannon came back swinging. Completions to Justin Dean and David Hatfield got the Bearcats rolling. But as Mena got as far as the Cobra 10, Cannon was picked off again. Cannon was 7 for 17 for 86 yards on the night.

The Cobras took over and with solid runs from Wilson, McCoy, and Ross, they moved 90 yards in only 10 plays. Hunter Bryant put the exclamation point on a dominant 3rd quarter as he plunged in from the 2 to give the Cobras a 42 to 0 lead.

Mena took over in the 4th quarter and Mena moved from their own 36 to the Cobra 9.

The Bearcat pass was intercepted again. Mena’s defense rose up and forced a fumble on Fountain Lake’s next possession. Elijah Barnes recovered the loose ball for the next Mena possession. Dean and Cannon accounted for all of the yards on the next drive and with 2:03 to play in the game, Cannon scored form 8 yards out and Mena prevented the shutout 42 to 7. The Bearcats will face area foe this week on the road in Waldron. “Anytime you get to go on the on the field, you have the opportunity to get better. We are very disappointed the way the season has turned out but I could not be more pleased with the seniors. We got 17 seniors that play. They have had a tough year. They are coached well and getting better every week. We need to go down there and play our best football game of the year.”

The Bulldogs have struggled of late. They are 0 and 9 on the year. They have also lost 42 games in a row dating back to 2011. They have a new coach this year in former Booneville defensive coordinator Rickey May.
