The 2019 Jr. Union Bank Invitational Tournament tipped off on Monday, December 2, at the Union Bank Center. In the first round of the Girls Bracket, Cossatot River defeated Arkansas High 30-27, and Mena took down Horatio 31-29. Arkansas High and Horatio advanced to a Wednesday consolation game, as Cossatot advanced to the second round against De Queen on Wednesday. The Mena Jr. Ladycats will play the winner of Cossatot and De Queen on Thursday in the Championship game at 5:00pm.

In the Boys Bracket, Arkansas High was victorious 33-32 over Cossatot River in the first round, while Mena dominated Horatio 60-14. Arkansas High took on De Queen in the second round on Wednesday, with a trip to the Championship on the line. The Mena Jr. Bearcats will play the winner on Thursday at 6:20pm in the Championship game.

So far this season, the Mena Jr. Ladycats hold a record of 4-2, with losses to only Greenwood and Lake Hamilton. Ladycat Coach Heather Goss noted on her team, “I’ve been really proud of our effort so far this year.”

With a new style of play at hand, Goss said, “They’re starting to really buy into what we’re doing, so that is good. Defensively, they are really concentrating, but offensively we have struggled.”

Goss has faith in her team though. She went on to say, “They’re getting it and they’ll figure it out.”

The Mena Jr. Boys are also off to a good start, with a 5-3 overall record. Coach Randy Peters noted his team doesn’t have a whole lot of experience, but they are progressing. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but the more we play the more potential we see.”
