Bearcats bring home River Valley Football League Championship

Going into this season, Coach Brian Hensley said he knew his team had a good chance at being the top team in the league.

In years past, Mena has won the Arkansas/Oklahoma River Valley Pony Division, and several of the players on this years roster were on the team that won the Midget Division in 2018.

The Mena 6th grade squad opened their season against Booneville. Mena's defense held their opponent to only 6 points, and the home town Bearcats won their first contest 16-6.

Moving on to week two, the Bearcats showed their stellar defense was no fluke. Mena defeated the Alma Airedales 14-0.

After a week three bye, Mena was back on the field against Heavener in week four. The Bearcats improved their record to 3-0 with a 32-6 victory.

Week five ended up being a solid defensive battle for the Bearcats against Charleston. Mena won the ballgame 6-0.

From week six on to the end of the regular season, the Bearcats outscored their final four opponents by a score of 166-18, securing four wins over Ozark, Waldron, Clarksville, and Paris.

After an undefeated 8-0 regular season, the Bearcats advanced to the playoffs with unfinished business. In round one, the Bearcats squared up with the Waldron Bulldogs. The opposing team stood no chance, as Mena ran away with the game 52-0.

Round two of the playoffs wound up being very similar, as the Bearcats again ran away with the game, this time with a 48-0 win over the Paris Eagles, to advance to the Championship game.

As you might expect, the Bearcats played fantastic defense, and took down the Charleston Tigers 24-0, to win the 2019 Arkansas/Oklahoma River Valley Football League Midget Division.

With their 11-0 season in 2019, this group of Bearcats has now gone 24-4 since their 4th grade season, and has won their last 23 straight games, outscoring their opponents 686-42.

"We have preached solid defense each year," said Bearcat Coach Brian Hensley. "Although our offense is very deadly, we feel like our advantage is the stingy defense that we play."

In 28 games, this group has shutout their opponent 19 times.

"That is a testament to the ability for our kids to prepare for an opponent and our ability to run our good scout team each week," said Hensley.

Hensley noted he usually has around 23-25 players on the roster, which helps to be able to run a full scrimmage to prepare for each game.

After a tremendous year and River Valley League career, Hensley noted of his team, "I am very proud of each individual player. They have a bright future ahead of them. I will miss coaching them."

The Mena Bearcat 6th grade team includes #2 Tripp Hensley; #3 Chance Hughes; #4 Landon Wilson; #5 Bayden Garrett; #7 Levi Neufeld; #14 Drake Dollar; #15 Dax McMellon; #17 Hunter Walters; #18 Tim Wilson; #23 Sawyer Golden; #24 Jonathan Lowery; #27 Gage Davis; #34 Colton Trahan; #39 Michael Howard; #41 Beck Vacca; #44 Jimmy Glenn; #48 Grayson Cook; #56 Eathan Caldwell; #58 Maxwell Rocha; #66 Grayson Farringer; #71 Ian Kiersey; #73 Evan Price; #75 Mason Burk; #76 Guice Anderson; #77 Dylon Morris.
