After a tough loss in a defensive battle with the Ozark Hillbillies last week, the Mena Bearcats (3-1, 0-1) are ready to bounce back this Friday as the Pottsville Apaches (1-3, 0-1) come to town for Homecoming.
Mena's offense was unable to put any points up against the Hillbillies' defense last Friday, in a game which was tied 0-0 at halftime. The game changer came in the third quarter, when an Ozark punt bounced off the back of a Bearcat and was recovered by the Hillbillies well into Mena territory. Ozark went on to score after the Bearcats mishap, and take the 7-0 lead.
Ozark scored once more late in the fourth quarter, to make the eventual final score 14-0.
"I'm really proud of our defense. I thought our defense played extremely well," said Bearcat Head Coach Craig Bentley.
The first-year Bearcat Coach noted on the game, "It was a battle between two really, really good teams, and unfortunately we came out on the back end of it."
Bentley took full credit for Mena's error in the third quarter saying, "That's on me. I should've had our team more prepared for special situations, and I will take full responsibility for that."
On the Bearcat Offense, Bentley stated, "We ran the ball well at times, but we have to be more consistent and find a way to get the ball to our play makers more." Bentley added that his team is working hard, and will be dangerous when it all clicks.
A highlight for Mena fans may have come in the first half, when Mena senior Devan Adams made a highlight-reel interception. Adams' pick ranked #1 in the Channel 5 News 'Top Stops' of the week. "He judged it perfectly. Devan is a great player, a great leader, and definitely a leader of the defense," said Bentley.
This week Mena is hosting the Pottsville Apaches at Bearcat Stadium for Homecoming. Mena's Coach noted on the Apaches, "Pottsville is a really good team, and they have played some good teams. They are fast and physical, and this is another big conference game for us."
According to Fearless Friday, the Bearcats have been beaten by Pottsville is a series of 5 total games. Hootens.com ranks Mena as the #11 team in 4A, and places the Apaches at #27.
The Apaches are coming into this Friday following a 45-26 loss to the Dardanelle Sand Lizards last week. Pottsville senior quarterback, Drew Rust, as rushed for more than 500 yards so far this season.
Kickoff at Bearcat Stadium this Friday, October 4, is scheduled for 7:00pm.
