After taking the reigns of the Mena senior boys basketball team in 2016, Coach Thomas Powell is leaving the Bearcats to become an assistant with the Bentonville West Wolverines.
In his three years as the head Bearcat, Powell led the team to a record of 50-35.
This past season, Powell’s Bearcats went 19-9 overall with a conference record of 10-2, and won their first Conference Championship since 2005.
"I'm very excited about the possibilities at Bentonville West, but it is very bitter sweet," said Powell on his departure. "Mena has become my home, and so much has happened. I got married here, my son was born here, and I got my first head coaching job here."
Powell added, "I want to thank the players, their parents, the teachers, administration, coaches, and the community for all the support and for trusting me to lead the basketball program. These past 6 years have shaped so much of my future and the future of my family. I am grateful."
With Powell's departure, Mena School District has now had five coaches leave this summer.
